DIY drone advice

I have a DJI mavic cheap clone made by Ruko which actually works decently but I want more. I want to build a 450 scale quad. I think I can pick out motors, 30A ESCs and a frame but I get lost after that. I want more range than a wifi drone so I need GPS but I don't know how that feeds into the controller. Can I build my own drone and have features like return to home? What part is the brain behind this? I have about $150 and I know that's not going to cover everything but I would like to line up the parts i need to figure out how much more money I need. Looking for advice on parts.
