A brief history of Monteza Castle
This castle was affected by the earthquake of 1748 in the city of Montesa itself and the Lisbon earthquake of 1755. The area of Montesa is considered to have low seismicity and this strong earthquake only happened in the last 500 years. Because of this earthquake, we can only enjoy some parts of the castle.
The ruins were abandoned by the Order of Montesa and have been state property since the landing in 1835. In 1868, the castle was purchased by Leopoldo de Pedro y Nash, who passed it on to his son Joaquín de Pedro. and in turn sold to Ramon Jorge de Dalmau y Falses. After litigation with the municipality of Montes in 1970, it passed into the hands of the municipal government.
The knighting ceremony took place there, and they stayed there to learn the professions and ceremonies of the Order of Santa María de Montes and San Jorge de Alfama.
“In the chapter house or church where the habit is to be given, the commander or gentleman who has this commission will sit on the chair in his woolen mantle, and the monk-priest on another. […] one will enter who must adopt the habit […] then the commander or knight will fasten the golden sword to the novice knight, and two men in habit will put golden spurs on him. After this, the novice will kneel, and the commander or knight will draw the novice’s sword from its scabbard and touch it to his right shoulder, head and left shoulder, saying these words: Almighty God do you good, sir, and the Mother of God and the blessed Saint Benedict, and may St. Bernard and St. George be your patrons. And everyone will answer: amen.
A monastery was built in the castle for the monks themselves, who had to undergo a year of novitiate and, if they wished, could receive the rank of priest in order to be appointed to parishes of the order.
In recent years, restoration work has been carried out, which allowed, among other things, to restore the entrance to the castle and restore the chapter house.
