Receivers confuse me (noob)

I’m getting ready to build my first drone, but am unsure what I need in order to have my transmitter connect to the receiver of my drone. I’ve seen some receivers which have a whole module that attaches to the transmitters, and others that don’t (like this https://www.team-blacksheep.com/products/prod:xf_nano_tx )

Are these required? Or do I simply need to find a transmitter which connected to the selected receiver? Thanks
